Soil Science

Archaeologists use soil science to describe and interpret natural and cultural strata at archaeological sites and to classify and characterize soil in terms of its suitability for agriculture and other purposes.

Hand augers are used to sample shallow buried deposits. Stratigraphy evident in this sediment core reveals a layer of burned earth, which indicates the presence of a burned structure beneath the ground surface.
