The TJ Smith Site

The TJ Smith site was named for the current land owners, Tammy and Jerry Smith.

Habitation.

The southern two thirds of the site is bounded by the extent of artifacts in a plowed field. County Roads 22.6 and K.3 are considered the northern boundary of the site. This site likely extended under the road construction but this northern extent can no longer be determined.

The surface signature of the site includes a scatter of gray ware ceramics and flaked lithics, a rock and burned adobe concentration at the center of the site, a remnant of a slab-lined room in an irrigation ditch along County Road K.3, 12 m north of the rock concentration. Three other possible surface rooms identified as rock and charcoal stained features in 1995 are now obscured by the construction of County Roads K.3 and 22.6. Remote sensing and testing of the site determined that it includes two additional early Basketmaker III surface rooms, a late Basketmaker III pithouse, and a low density midden.

Approximately 5 miles west of Cortez, Colorado, south of the intersection of County Roads 22.6 and K.3.

Less than one percent (16 m2) of the site area was excavated.

State of Colorado Archaeological Permits were obtained for each field season (2011-2014) to conduct archaeological research.
