Although there is evidence of occupation of the site as early as A.D. 775 (the early Pueblo I period), the primary occupation dates between A.D. 1050 and 1300 (the Pueblo II and Pueblo III periods). The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center conducted excavations at Shields Pueblo from 1997 through 2000.
