Participants excavating at Crow Canyon site

In 2008, Crow Canyon researchers will begin new excavations at several Pueblo sites in the Goodman Point Unit of the Hovenweep National Monument under the guidance of project director Grant Coffey and assistant directors Susan Ryan and Steve Copeland. The sites in the Goodman Point Unit are among the best preserved anywhere in the world, thanks to long-term protection by our partner, the National Park Service.

Join Grant and the Crow Canyon staff in an investigation of several intriguing sites in the unit, including an ancient road, a great kiva, and both single- and multifamily stone-and-adobe dwellings. All appear to be part of a larger community centered on Goodman Point Pueblo, a village excavated by Crow Canyon from 2005 through 2007.

Excavations in 2008 will build on our earlier work in the unit and are sure to reveal important new details about Pueblo life in the Goodman Point community more than 700 years ago.

Our Passion for Archaeology is Contagious!
For more than 20 years, thousands of archaeology enthusiasts have worked alongside Crow Canyon's professional researchers, generating fresh new insights into the ancient people who inhabited the rugged yet beautiful landscape of the American Southwest.

Sorting sherds in the lab at Crow CanyonDuring an Adult Research Week, you'll join our researchers in the field where you will unearth and analyze ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) artifacts that have been unseen and untouched for more than 700 years. In the lab, you'll identify and analyze ancient pottery and chipped-stone artifacts, adding a wealth of information to our research database. Your discoveries will make a real and lasting contribution to our collective understanding of the Pueblo past!

Throughout the week, enjoy fine meals, comfortable accommodations, and camaraderie with people from all walks of life who share your passion for archaeology.

The atmosphere of the Adult Research Week is fun, friendly, and relaxed, with lots of opportunities for questions and discussions. In addition to being knowledgeable and personable, our researchers are great teachers, dedicated to sharing their ideas and experiences with you. They are passionate about what they do and why they do it, and their enthusiasm is contagious. Spend a week with us and you'll understand why so many alumni return to Crow Canyon year after year!

We look forward to seeing you in 2008 as we embark on another exciting season of discovery!

Excavation at the Goodman Point Unit.

Laboratory processing, including cleaning and analyzing a variety of artifacts.

A tour of our temporary curation facility, where you will view artifacts from recent excavations.

Guided trips to nearby Mesa Verde National Park and Sand Canyon Pueblo, a site excavated by Crow Canyon.

Evening programs on several nights of the week, which include an introduction to Crow Canyon's research and a program presented by a staff archaeologist or guest lecturer on their current research in Southwestern archaeology.

Program for Novices
As a novice, you'll start off your week with an "Introduction to Crow Canyon" the evening of your arrival. The following day, you'll learn about the history of the Mesa Verde region through a hands-on activity called "Inquiries into the Past" before being introduced to the details of Crow Canyon's research in an evening presentation by a member of the research staff. The remainder of your week will be spent analyzing artifacts in the lab for one-half day, excavating in the field for one-and-a-half days, and enjoying evening lectures devoted to topics of current interest in Southwestern archaeology. Two guided tours by our expert staff—one of Sand Canyon Pueblo, which was excavated by Crow Canyon in the 1980s and 1990s, and one of nearby Mesa Verde National Park, a World Heritage site—will round out the week.

Adult Research Weeks Just for Novices
While novices are welcome during any week not reserved for alumni of Crow Canyon programs, we have reserved one week (August 31–September 6, 2008) as an introduction to archaeology designed just for first-time Crow Canyon archaeology program participants.

Program for Alumni
Individuals who have already participated in an Adult Research Week do not repeat introductory sessions, and spend more time excavating at the site. As an alumni, you will spend your week excavating for three days, analyzing artifacts in the lab for one day, conducting nonexcavation fieldwork for one day, and enjoying presentations from staff archaeologists and visiting scholars for two evenings.

Adult Research Weeks Just for Alumni
Two weeks at the end of the field season (September 21–27 and September 28–October 4, 2008) are reserved just for alumni. During each of these alumni-only weeks, you will spend four days excavating, one day analyzing artifacts in the lab, and two evenings enjoying presentations from staff archaeologists and visiting scholars.
