A Hopi Pottery Workshop

What to Expect

General Information

The workshop takes place on Crow Canyon's beautiful 170-acre campus (elevation 6200 feet). Most of your time will be spent creating a pottery vessel using traditional Hopi materials and techniques. Everyone will work at his or her own pace; previous experience is not required. Most evenings are free for you to work on your project, stroll the nature trail, or enjoy panoramic mountain views while relaxing in a rocking chair on the lodge deck.

Accommodations

Shared accommodations are provided in comfortable, Navajo-style log cabins ("hogans") on the Crow Canyon campus. Private rooms are not available and, depending on enrollment, couples might not be housed together. Shared, modern shower and restroom facilities are located in a separate building adjacent to the hogans. Bed linens are provided, but you need to bring your own towels.

Meals as listed in the itinerary are provided in the lodge dining hall. You'll be treated to delectable, healthy meals that feature hearty entrees and fresh fruits and vegetables. A salad bar and vegetable dishes are available for those who favor vegetarian cuisine.

Sharing the Campus

The Crow Canyon campus is a center of learning for children, teens, and adults! During this week, you may be sharing the campus with participants in other programs.

Weather

The climate in southwestern Colorado is generally very dry and sunny. Daytime summer temperatures average in the middle to upper 80s, though they can reach into the 90s and occasionally exceed 100. Nighttime temperatures are cooler and generally pleasant, averaging in the 50s. Although it can rain any time, afternoon thunderstorms are most common in July and August.
