Archaeologists Use Maps

This classroom workbook introduces students to mapping concepts and techniques used by archaeologists. Mapping skills are introduced using the floor plan of a typical modern American house. Students then work with a variety of archaeological maps that show floor plans of houses lived in by ancestral Pueblo Indians more than 700 years ago. Simulating the actual archaeological process, students take measurements and make observations that help them answer questions about the activities that took place in the ancient structures. The exercise encourages students to think like archaeologists, making inferences about ancient lifeways on the basis of the architecture and artifacts left behind by people long ago. 8 pages.
