Remembrances: Ed Choby and Priscilla Robinson

Pleasant View students
Ed Choby.

Longtime research program participant and cultural explorations traveler Ed Choby passed away at the age of 75 in Hot Springs, Colorado, on July 7 while on a hiking trip. Ed was a familiar face at Crow Canyon since 1990, when he joined us for an Archaeology Research Program, and later that year, a seminar. He participated in 37 research programs since then, most recently an Archaeology Research Program in 2012. He also traveled with us on five cultural explorations hiking trips. He volunteered in the lab occasionally, helping Collections Manager Jamie Merewether with special projects such as binding manuscripts, reshelving books, and working on collections management tasks for Albert Porter and Shields pueblos. His other hobbies included gardening, reading, and making miniature furniture.

Environmentalist Priscilla Robinson died July 29 at the age of 82. Priscilla was intimately involved in the passage of many key environmental laws and regulations in Arizona, and was a Planned Parenthood lobbyist in the 1960s and 70s. In the 1950s, she worked as a state social worker on the Navajo and Hopi reservations. Her husband, Bill, is a past director of the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona, and remains active as an archaeologist in Tucson. Bill and Priscilla have been Chairman’s Council members at Crow Canyon since 2004.

We send condolences to the families of Ed and Priscilla.
