Travel Adventures 2013: Pueblos of the Rio Grande
Letter from Cultural Explorations
Dear friends,
If you’ve traveled with Crow Canyon before, you know what’s special about our educational tours. Expert guides, including indigenous scholars. Privileged access. And the opportunity to be part of the conversation about some of the most fascinating research issues in archaeology and anthropology today.
Our summer 2013 trip Pueblos of the Rio Grande is a great example. On this trip, we’ll trace the dynamic history of the Pueblo Indians of north-central New Mexico. The itinerary will take us to archaeological sites including Bandelier National Monument and Puye Cliff Dwellings. We’ll also visit the contemporary pueblos of Cochiti, Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan), Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, and Kewa (Santo Domingo). Our trip is timed to coincide with a Pueblo feast day, featuring traditional songs, dances, and foods.
If you’re new to the Southwest, Pueblos of the Rio Grande offers a fantastic introduction to Pueblo culture, past and present. If you’re a seasoned traveler, please note this trip’s special emphasis: ancestral villages that were occupied during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the subsequent Spanish reconquest of New Mexico.
Expect a lively dialogue on this topic with our scholars: Dr. Joseph Suina, a native Keres speaker, former governor of Cochiti Pueblo, and member of Crow Canyon's Board of Trustees and Native American Advisory Group; Dr. Robert Preucel (Brown University), a leader in the field that integrates archaeology and Native American studies; and Woody Aguilar, a native Tewa speaker from San Ildefonso Pueblo and doctoral candidate in anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. The focus of his research is the archaeology of Black Mesa, where his ancestors resisted the Spanish forces of Diego de Vargas.
The trip runs July 30–August 5, 2013. For more information, please call 800.422.8975, ext. 160 or 136; e-mail us; or use our secure reservation form to reserve your place now.
In the meantime, keep exploring.
