Special EventsThroughout the year, Crow Canyon holds a number of special events—on campus and in cities across the country—to raise awareness of, and support for, the Center's mission. Second Annual Open House FestivalSeptember 18, 2010
From 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., adults and children are invited to the Crow Canyon campus to learn about Southwestern archaeology, meet the Center's staff, and enjoy a day of fun and engaging activities. Activities include: throwing a spear with an atlatl, playing traditional American Indian games, starting fire without matches, making clay pots, watching how arrowheads are made, and viewing the award-winning film, Visit with Respect. Lakota flute player David Nighteagle will perform and local musicians will entertain throughout the day. A lunch of barbecued hot dogs, chips, cookies, iced tea, and lemonade will be available for $5. As a bonus for educators, a free workshop will be presented from 9:00 a.m. to noon for teachers to learn about archaeology, educational resources, and grant funding opportunities for school groups coming to Crow Canyon. There is no charge for the festival. Call 970.564.4341 for more information. Annual Meeting of the Crow Canyon Archaeological CenterOctober 14–16, 2010Members of Crow Canyon's Chairman's Council are invited to attend this year's annual meeting, which will feature keynote speaker Dr. Patricia L. Crown, anthropologist, author, and distinguished professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico. Her Friday-evening presentation will be "Science and Serendipity: The Discovery of Chocolate in Chaco Canyon." She is currently directing the analysis of artifacts from the trash mounds at Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon; one result of this research was the recent identification of the first prehispanic cacao north of the Mexican border. On Saturday, Dr. William Lipe will present "Before Lake Powell: Memories of Glen Canyon." He will draw upon his recollections, as well as 50-year-old photos and film, to discuss the significance of flooding Glen Canyon and what was learned about the area's archaeology before it was forever affected by the development of Lake Powell. Other fun and informative activities are planned for the weekend—a Goodman Point Unit tour, a panel discussion by former interns, a scavenger hunt, an atlatl contest, and a tour of the Dillard site. You'll also have the opportunity to show your support for Crow Canyon by participating in two silent auctions: the Native American Advisory Group auction on Friday and the annual fund auction on Saturday. The meeting will culminate in the presentation of Crow Canyon's Distinguished Service and Honor awards at the Saturday-evening dinner.
