The 1998 High School Field School (HSFS) worked at the Shields Site for their field work. The site has been plowed and farmed therefore, spreading artifacts over the entire field. Because of this, the lay 'o the land is pretty flat.

Some of the land that the site occupies is privately owned, so the buildings and artifacts in that area cannot be excavated, which is fine because not all of what Crow Canyon has a permit for can be excavated anyway. The site itself was primarily occupied from AD 1050 to AD 1225. It is located near three much bigger sites; Goodman Point Pueblo, Sand Canyon Pueblo, and Yellow Jacket Pueblo.

In 1977 the COLORADO MOUNTAIN COLLEGE partially excavated the site. In their searching they found a kiva and a room-block.

Crow Canyon began excavations of Shields in 1997 and continued in '98. The 1998 HSFS worked more in the kiva in an attempt to find the original floor. They also are working on sample units around the site, a hill behind the kiva that is littered with pot sherds, and three pit structures.

Crow Canyon has specific questions that they want to answer about Shields. In archaeology terms, a reaserch design that they call COMMUNITIES THOUGH TIME: MIGRATION, COOPERATION, AND CONFLICT.
